This year, we’d like to get everyone together in Denver as well, just for the fun of it. And where else than Falling Rock Tap House?

Falling Rock Tap House owners Chris and Steve Black hail from Kingwood, in fact, Falling Rock was modeled after The Ginger Man. If you happen to be in Denver during GABF, let’s meet up at Falling Rock on Thursday, October 11, any time from 1-5 PM. This is totally informal, just stop by and say hi to fellow craft beer-loving Texans. See you there!

As many of you probably know, around this time last year, Houston’s coveted Petrol Station won Stone Brewing’s Most Bitter Bar Challenge. This isn’t a city or state competition- Petrol Station sold more of Stone’s hoppy beer than any other bar in the nation. It’s not just an amazing feat because of Petrol’s modest size, it says a whole lot about craft beer’s steep rise in Texas. This tells the world that there’s a big market for craft beer in Houston and Texas- and the bigger our market gets, the more varieties of beer we’ll see around here in upcoming years. Let’s help them do it again!

This contest ends Sunday night at midnight. Give these hometown heroes your business tonight and this weekend, and fill up some growlers too. These are the beers that qualify:

Stone IPA
Stone Cali-Belgique IPA
Stone Ruination IPA
Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous Ale

Tonight at Petrol, The Modular is having their first anniversary, so you’ll have plenty of fine cuisine to pair up with your Stone beers. Growler fills are only $8 for Stone IPA, and $16 for Ruination. If you’re on Twitter, use the hashtag #MostBitterRepeat, and help spread the word!

**********UPDATE 7/19/2012!

Today Ben Fullelove got the call from Greg Koch from Stone. PETROL STATION WINS MOST BITTER BAR IN AMERICA! Way to go Houston!

November 2012 will be our third Houston Beer Week- it experienced remarkable growth in 2011, and we expect 2012 to be even bigger. In fact, it’s a pretty good guess that Houston Beer Week will continue to grow each year for the foreseeable future.

How do we continue to manage the growth?

We build a committee of craft beer fans, dedicated to turning Houston into an indomitable craft beer city.

For the first time, Houston has its own Beer Week Committee.

The HBWC will help us manage a number of issues during Houston Beer Week from the advancement of Houston Beer Week to folks in the Houston area, to also helping manage and staff for the associated beer festival, The Draft (formerly known as Monsters Of Beer Festival). Each Team on the HBWC will have duties that are unique to that Team but will also have duties in line with general promotion of HBW and The Draft.

Why join?

Supports your local craft beer community – the more people we help convert to craft beer, the more craft beer we can expect to see in Houston
Saves you money – discounts, happy hours with limited free beer, cool swag and other perks await those with committee membership
Bragging Rights – we expect slots to fill up in the first year, and members get first right to re-join next year. Be the coolest person on your block (or at least in your house).

Membership has lots of perks:

Houston Beer Week badge – only available to committee members
Free HBW T-shirt
Option to buy an embroidered HBW Committee work shirt – available only to HBW Committee members
Access to The Draft (new name of Monsters Of Beer) after or before your shift
Reduced cost tickets to The Draft Fest for up to 4 friends/family
Reduced cost prices on HBW merchandise
Happy Hours and other events just for committee members during the year
Wrap up party for HBW committee members after close of The Draft festival

How to join:

Fill out a form
Pay dues of $20 (covers the cost of your badge part of the happy hours cost)
Join one of our committees and earn your badge
What Teams are available?

There are several Teams available and they are listed below along with the overall duties associated with each Team. Most of these duties don’t even come into play until during HBW or The Draft, so you aren’t committing to huge amounts of time over the course of the year. Mostly, we plan to get together during the year to plan and just have fun.

Essentially, when you join the HBW Committee, you commit to the following:

Complete duties assigned to your Team (see below) during HBW and The Draft
Help sell tickets to the The Draft. Each committee member will have a goal of 10 tickets to sell to the The Draft.
Help spread the word to great bars and restaurants regarding HBW
Help put up posters, flyers and other activities to promote HBW and The Draft Fest
Hefty, metal badges will be awarded to committee members approximately one month in advance of Houston Beer Week. As you’ve seen in recent media, it’s going to be a year of incredible fun and amazing beer.

Beer Servers
Duties: Committee members will man a booth at The Draft and serve beer tastings to attendees
Requirements:
Must have TABC certification (do not need this to join the committee, but must be willing to take the course before the event – it costs $25, is online and takes about 2 hours). The cost to obtain your TABC certification is in addition to your committee dues.
Will need to commit to working one four hour shift during The Draft
Number of Positions: This is the largest committee, which will expand to 200, perhaps more.

Set-Up/Break-Down/Afterparty
Duties: Committee members will assist with set up for The Draft on Saturday early morning and break-down of The Draft Saturday afternoon/evening. This will include setting up/breaking down tables, chairs, auctions, t-shirt stands, and especially collecting our signage (which is reusable), etc. It will not include setting up tents or other large-scale event needs. Then you will help put together the AFTERPARTY — which will be a blast.

Requirements: Must be able to commit to at least either set-up or break-down times slots. We expect both to take a minimum of 4 hours and a maximum of 6 hours.
Number of Positions: Up to 15 members

Draft System, Ice & Water
Duties: Committee members will make sure that the beer keeps flowing, water jugs for free water remain full, and that brewery booths have enough ice during The Draft.
Requirements:
Must be intimately familiar with draft equipment such as couplers, jockey box set-up and trouble shooting, regulators, draft line set up and cleaning, and gas maintenance.
Must be able to commit to work the entire day of The Draft. Your duties will only be on an “as needed” basis, however, so you will be able to enjoy the festival for the majority of the time.
Number of Positions: Up to 20

Merchandise Sales/Art Keg Auction
Duties: Committee members will man either the merchandise sales tables or the Art Keg Auction table. You will take credit card information for the Art Keg Auction and assign Auction Numbers to bidders.
Requirements: Must be able to commit to one four hour shift during The Draft.
Number of Positions: Up to 10

Check-In Table/Ticket Sales
Duties: Committee members will man the check-in table, manage tasting cup disbursement, conduct ID checks, and day-of tickets sales at the entrance to The Draft.
Requirements: Must be able to commit to one four hour shift during The Draft.
Number of Positions: Up to 20
Brewer’s Retreat/Beer Garden
Duties: Committee members will man the beer stations in the Brewer’s Retreat and in the Beer Garden.
Requirements:
Must be TABC certified (do not need to be TABC certified upon joining committee, but must be willing to complete certification course before The Draft – online, $20, takes approximately 2 hours). The cost of the TABC certification is in addition to committee dues.
Must be willing to commit to one four hour shift during The Draft.
Number of Positions: Up to 20 – not many spaces remain on this team

Marketing & Calendar
Duties: Committee members will reach out to bars/restaurants regarding HBW and encourage participation by those establishments. You will also be responsible for making sure that the events each bar/restaurant sends in are accurately reflected on the HBW calendar.
Requirements:
Must be able and willing to deal with a lot of craft beer-centric people
Must be able or willing to learn how to upload information to our website
Must commit to several hours over the course of many weeks in advance of HBW
Number of Positions: Up to 4
